Aetna Health Professions Partnership Initiative

The program is:

  • For college pre-freshmen who will be matriculating at a four-year institution. Priority consideration will be given to pipeline participants.
  • A six-week summer program.
  • Focused on enhancing the preparation of high school seniors for college.
  • Held on the campus of Central Connecticut State University in New Britian
  • Designed to provide solid development of scientific (biology and chemistry), mathematical (pre-calculus), communications, problem-solving, and test taking skills though courses in Chemistry, Biology, English, and Math.
  • Structured to provide room and board.

How to Apply

All Applicants Should:

  • Be college pre-freshmen who will be matriculating at a four-year institution with a ‘B’ average or better.
  • Have a high motivation and demonstrated potential for pursuing a career in medicine, dental medicine or biomedical research.
  • Be from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the health professions (African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian) or others from disadvantaged backgrounds who meet all eligibility criteria and have a high probability of fulfilling the social and educational goals of this program.
  • Submit a completed Application to hcop@uchc.edu.
  • Have an official transcript submitted from each high school attended.
  • Provide two letters of recommendation, at least one from a science teacher.
  • Provide a copy of your Federal Income Tax Form 1040 or Equivalent for 2014 (submit 1040 when completed and filed).
  • Submit official SAT and/or ACT score report.

Aetna Health Professions Partnership Initiative

The program:

  • Is for college sophomores, juniors, seniors or recent graduates. Priority consideration will be given to pipeline participants.
  • Is a nine-week program.
  • Is designed to provide a research enrichment experience and some exposure to clinical or dental medicine.
  • Is for students who are interested in a career in medicine, dental medicine or biomedical research and for applicants who have completed some college coursework in biology and chemistry (preferably through organic chemistry).
  • Is devoted to approximately 30 hours per week of work on a research project and 10 hours per week to required clinical experiential.
  • Provides housing, meals, and a stipend.

The selected student will identify a faculty sponsor. Faculty develops and makes available suitable project descriptions. The student contacts his/her faculty sponsor in April or May and develops a research protocol. Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) students are encouraged to apply.

Important Dates

  • March 1, 2016: Submission date for all applications. All applications must be submitted by midnight March 1 to be considered for admission. Submission date for all supporting documents. All supporting documents must be received by March 1 to be considered for admission.
  • February 15, 2016: Admission decisions for applications completed by February 1, 2016.
  • April 1, 2016: Admission decisions for applications completed after February 1, 2016.
  • May 31, 2016: First day of program.
  • July 29, 2016: Last day of program.

  • Is designed to provide a clinical research and enrichment experience and an introduction to health disparities, cross cultural issues, principles of clinical medicine and skills for public health research and interventions and an overview of approaches to cultural definitions, public health issues and discussion of specific techniques for working with diverse populations in community settings.

Senior Doctors Academy

The program is:

  • For 12th grade students interested in medicine, dental medicine or biomedical research. Priority acceptance into the program will be given to former Great Explorations, Jumpstart, and Junior Doctors Academies participants and students enrolled in Hartford Public Schools.
  • Provides students with a review of pre-calculus, calculus, biology, physics, anatomy and physiology, and writing.
  • Offers a six-week, Monday-Friday, Summer Academic Enrichment Program for the selected students.
  • Offers a 30-week, Saturday Academy during the academic school year where students can continue to enhance their academic skills, college preparation, and exposure to careers in the health professions.
  • Classes are held at the UConn Greater Hartford Campus. Transportation is provided to Hartford residents.
  • Provides qualified students with an earned stipend.
  • Geared towards students who meet certain socio-economic guidelines (low income and/or first generation to attend college) and demonstrate a strong motivation and potential to enroll in a four year college program. See application for additional qualification criteria.
  • Parent/Guardian Orientation Workshops are held for all students participating in the program.
  • Parental Seminar Series are held for parents/guardians of all students participating in the program.
  • Enables students to be eligible to participate in the Pre-college Enrichment Program during the summer of their graduating senior year.

  • Focused on enhancing the preparation of high school seniors for college.
  • Held on the campus of UConn in Storrs.

The Pre-College Academic Enrichment Program held at UConn Storrs is in collaboration with the BRIDGE program sponsored by the Engineering Diversity Office in the School of Engineering at the UConn Storrs campus.  Students in both programs will receive the same course instruction and room and board accommodations, and will participate in the same activities during the five-week period.  Participants in the Pre-College Academic Enrichment Program will also have opportunities to visit the UConn Health campus in Farmington and interact with professionals in the health fields.  For pre-freshmen who have applied to or will be matriculating in UConn’s School of Engineering and plan to major in engineering fields other than Biomedical Engineering, please visit the BRIDGE website for more information.

  • 11th and 12th grade students, who are in state residents. Priority consideration will be given to pipeline participants.
  • Students who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine, dental medicine and the biological sciences.
  • Students who are selected by their school guidance counselors or science teachers.

The program is made up of:

  • A series of eight weekly lectures and demonstrations presented by faculty members of the UConn Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine.
  • Two-hour lecture sessions.
  • Topics on molecular biology, pharmacology, cardiology, oncology and dental medicine.
